Spelling Bee Champs Crowned

What’s the best way to crown a w-i-n-n-e-r? Test everyone’s lexicon until there is only one left with all the letters in the right o-r-d-e-r. Tuesday night, the Christian County Literacy Council invited students from third to eighth grade to participate in the 3rd Annual Spelling Bee.

Council Executive Director Francene Gilmore and Spelling Bee Organizer Beth Brockman says it was a great night.

click to download audioStudents were split into two categories 3rd-5th and 6th-8th. It took 174 words over 24 rounds to whittle 54 elementary students down to one spelling champion – Millbrooke 5th grader, Alex Luther who correctly spelled Cheetah and Chimney to secure his win. Second place went to Sarah Jackson, a South Christian 4th grader, and third place to UHA 4th grader Maanya Patel.

Seven competed in the middle school division, with Prisha Shah taking first place.

click to download audioShah finished third last year in the division. She is currently in eighth grade at UHA. Second place went to Jackson Faulkner in 6th grade at Millbrooke, and third place to Vedang Patel in 6th grade at UHA. The first-place winners received Kindles and $100.
