Last week, Kentucky Lottery officials announced that a Christian County woman was the winner of a $2 million Powerball prize — copping some cash in the middle of a run to the country’s second-largest jackpot in history.
Now, more details have been released about the lucky lady.
After being surprised by lottery officials October 4, an Oak Grove woman, Jacalyn Armstrong, called her husband, Jonathan, to tell him the news.
She had just left an OB-GYN appointment.
“I told him I had some news and at first, he didn’t believe me,” Jacalyn said, laughing. “You could tell I was in tears, and he thought I was going to tell him I was pregnant. My mom thought the same thing when I called her. I was like, what is wrong with you all?”
Jonathan said, “The Powerball news was just as exciting.”
The couple have three children, the youngest at six months old, and Jacalyn told officials she doesn’t often play the lottery.
“When [the jackpot] gets big, my co-workers talk about it,” she said. “One of them even said, ‘You should buy a ticket.’”
It had been a while since she had played online, so she had to first get her password reset before being able to purchase her tickets. She hadn’t even told her husband she’d bought the tickets, so he was even more surprised.
She purchased a total of six Powerball tickets, and the winner matched the five white ball numbers winning the game’s $1 million second prize. And since she added the Power Play to her tickets, her prize doubled from $1 million to $2 million.
The Armstrongs had plans to visit Jonatha’s family in Pennsylvania over the fall break, and stopped by the lottery office on the way back to pick up a check — which, after taxes, totaled $1.4 million.
Their plan, they said, is to give some money to their church, purchase a larger home and buy a new car.
