Christian County had two wrestlers win first-round matches at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championship on Thursday, but they were unable to advance through to the medal round.
Kevondre Young at 120 opened with a sudden death win, but a second-round loss dropped him to the consolation bracket. After a win by a major decision in the consolation round, his tournament was ended by Boyle County’s Ethan Masters.
Young’s season ends with a record of 24-9.
Xaveiyon Reid won his opener in the 285-pound class over Bryce Sizemore of Connor. However, Hayden Merrick lost his opening-round match to eventual fourth-place winner Hunter Luttrell of Fairdale.
He bounced back to win his next two matches but fell to Union County’s Luke Thomas in the third round. Merrick finished his season with a record of 21-6.
After an opening-round loss in the 132-pound class, Dane Miller rebounded to win a pair of matches before losing in the third consolation round. Miller posted a 20-6 record this season.
Also advancing to the state tournament for the first time was Anthony Velasco who went 0-2 on the opening day.
Christian County totaled 16 points and finished in 43rd place.
