Proposed Football Alignment Would See Trigg, Hoptown Change Classes

Some football districts in western Kentucky will take on a radical new look if the proposed draft alignment of teams for the 2025-26 seasons is approved by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

The draft alignment was presented at the KHSAA Board of Control Meeting on Tuesday in Lexington and approved by the board.

The biggest change would occur in Class 2A District 1 where Caldwell County, Crittenden County, Fort Campbell, and Mayfield would be joined by Trigg County and Todd County Central for a six-team district.

Todd County Central makes the move from District 2 while Trigg County drops from Class 3A. The proposed alignment means two teams from District 1 would miss the postseason.

The move back to Class 2A is potentially good news for Trigg County, which has only won one playoff game and hosted one playoff game since moving up to Class 3A in 2011.

The move is curious for Todd County Central, who has participated in District 2 since moving up to class 2A in 2000.

Murray, who has participated in Class 2A District 1 since 2007 would replace Trigg County in Class 3A District 1.

Class 2A District 2 would be comprised of Fort Knox, which moves up from Class 1A, Owensboro Catholic, the only district holdover from last year, and Hancock County and McLean County which would drop from Class 3A back to 2A.

One other alignment change would see Hopkinsville move to Class 6A in 2025. The Tigers moved from Class 3A to 5A in 2007 and dropped back to 4A in 2015. They would join a Class 6A District 1 that includes Christian County, Henderson County, and McCracken County.

Hopkinsville and Christian County are set to combine into the new Christian County High School that could open its doors in 2025 or 2026. That new school would then be placed in Class 6A District 1.

Also making a jump to Class 6A would be South Warren, a school that when created in 2011 was Class 3A in size.

Class 1A District 1 would remain unchanged with Ballard Memorial, Caverna, Fulton County, and Russellville.

Class 4A District 1 would consist of Allen County-Scottsville, Calloway County, Franklin-Simpson, Logan County, Paducah Tilghman, and Warren East.

Class 5A District 1 would consist of Apollo, Graves County, Madisonville-North Hopkins, Marshall County, Muhlenberg County, and Owensboro.

A survey of all member schools will be conducted to determine who will participate in the postseason for the 2025-26 seasons and gather feedback on the proposed alignment as well as hear any appeals and potential adjustments.

The KHSAA will vote on the final draft in May.
