Officials with the South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council convened in special session Monday afternoon in Hopkinsville — looking ahead to remembrance next Monday for Memorial Day.
As such, SWK EDC Executive Director Carter Hendricks took time to reflect on the Third Annual Jobs Fest Job Fair, which wrapped up May 2 in the Planters Bank-Jennie Stuart Health Sportsplex.
Just over 100 students from several local schools attended, many of them securing interviews, callbacks and job offers over these last two weeks from nearly 20 different industries.
Students had to self-proclaim they weren’t going to college or the military, but were looking for opportunities in this job shed directly after graduation — many of which have already commenced.
In other SWK EDC news:
— Hendricks noted Monday was the birthday of Todd County Judge-Executive Todd Mansfield.
It was also the birthday of Planters Bank’s Jason Jenkins.
— Furthermore, Hendricks gave a nod to Eston and Jo Glover, who last week were honored with the “Distinguished Citizen Award” from The Lincoln Heritage Council, Boys Scout of America.
The accolade is annually presented to an individual or individuals who provide outstanding civic service to adults and youths of the community. And they aren’t necessarily volunteers of Boys Scouts, but personify what the organization stands for: good citizenship, outstanding moral fiber, a dedication to others, and a life lived closely to the Scout Oath and Law.
— Hendricks also said he was asked to be a part of, and participated in, a panel discussion alongside Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation President Claude Bacon and Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development’s Christopher Snyder in Somerset.
The topic: the intersection of tourism and economic development.
And partnerships matter.
— Taylor Hayes, with the Christian County Chamber of Commerce, made a note of two dates:
At 10:30 AM Friday in the Pennyrile Area Development District Board Room, Kentucky Chamber Senior Vice President Kate Shanks will be offering a 2024 Kentucky Legislative Review Session, discussing bills and policies passed during the biennium that will impact competitiveness and ongoing tax reform efforts.
June 1, applications are due for the 2024-25 Christian County Leadership Class, with selection notifications going out by July 1.
And then, the 135th Annual Chamber Dinner is scheduled for 6 PM Thursday, June 20, at The Bruce Convention Center. KET’s Renee Shaw is the confirmed guest speaker, with tickets at $80 per member, and $100 per non-member.
