A well-known Hopkinsville businessman passed away earlier this week.

Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home reported that David Lea Sturges passed away Monday at Jennie Stuart Medical Center. He was 89 years old.

Born January 3, 1935, in New York, he attended the same school as Jim Brown, a former fullback for the Cleveland Browns. After graduating from Manhasset High School, he attended Centre College in Danville. In 1961, he settled in Hopkinsville, where he took over Blue Lake Block Company and later co-founded Coldwell Banker MetroNet Realty, creating the city’s first real estate website.

Sturges was named Outstanding Young Man by the Hopkinsville Jaycees in 1968 and introduced the tradition of setting American flags in front of homes. He served on numerous boards, including the Hopkinsville Economic Council, the Industrial Foundation, and the City Council.

Nationally, he was president of the National Precast Concrete Association from 1979-1980. Locally, he was inducted into the Hopkinsville-Christian Todd Board of Realtors Hall of Fame in 2016.
