Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell has declared September 15-21 as Farm Safety and Health Week in Kentucky, aligning with National Farm Safety and Health Week.
The week’s theme, “Don’t Learn Safety by Accident,” emphasizes the importance of safety on farms.
In a written statement Shell said farmers face numerous risks daily, from machinery accidents to severe weather. He noted that strides in safety have been made, but added that one injury is too many. Whether on the farm, road, or home, Shell said we should always prioritize safety.
The week also highlights public safety measures during the busy fall harvest season. Initiated by the National Safety Council and recognized by U.S. Presidents since 1944, the week promotes farm safety.
According to Shell, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) supports farm safety through its Farm and Home Safety Program, offering educational resources and training. He said the program, active for 25 years, recently incorporated the Raising Hope project to improve farmers’ mental and physical health.
To raise awareness, the Kentucky House passed House Resolution 59, declaring Wednesday of Kentucky’s Farm Safety Week as Farmer Suicide Prevention Day.
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture will host its second annual Farmers Appreciation and Awards Day on Wednesday at Western Kentucky University’s LD Brown Ag Expo Center in Bowling Green. The event, starting at 9:30 Wednesday morning will feature free food, health screenings, and educational booths.
