As Trial Nears, Spikes Again Asks For New Attorney

Lodged in Christian County Jail for more than two years on charges of murdering Stanley Bussell and Candace Marcel, Bobby Spikes is once again asking for new representation in his case — one expected to go to trial this November.

Standing next to his attorney, Eric Bearden, Monday afternoon, Spikes opened with a rhetorical question directed at Circuit Judge John Atkins.

Bearden said he “frankly didn’t know” where this conversation was coming from, but that a capital case of this nature would have co-counsel heading into trial.

Spikes asked: “Bearden doesn’t have to be one of them, does he?” And Bearden brought forth the bad news.

Atkins told Spikes he was “ordered to court” Monday for a motion hearing, and nothing more, and that it was up to the Department of Public Advocacy to “make the next move” on his potential representation.

Spikes objected.

The motion hour was recessed for 9 AM Thursday, in order to give Bearden, Spikes and special prosecutor Blake Chambers more time to find in-person, expert testimony of recent geo-fencing data that has been returned — and potentially implicates Spikes further in the crime.

Bussell’s body was found at Marcel’s Hopkinsville home in December 2021. Marcel’s body, meanwhile, was located in a car in eastern Trigg County later that day. Police said both victims had been shot, with Marcel reportedly Spikes’ former girlfriend.
