JR Hermes, 92, of Cadiz

Funeral services for 92-year-old JR Hermes, of Cadiz, will be 11 AM Monday, September 30, at King’s Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at 2 PM in Evansville’s Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 AM until the funeral hour.

Survivors include:
His son, Nathan Kent (Lori), of Cadiz;
Grandchildren: Alexis Kent, of Bowling Green, Jacob Kent, of Cadiz, Emily Kent, of Eddyville, Dominique Vanover (Derek), of Lewisport, Laine Duke (Billy), of Owensboro;
And great grandchildren, Kevin Vanover, Jimmie Vanover, Rylee Duke, and Scarlett Duke.

He went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 27, 2024. He died peacefully, surrounded by those that loved him.

He was born June 24, 1932, in Enid, Oklahoma, to late Howard W. Hermes and Alma Ruth (Crum) Hermes.

The Hermes family moved to Long Beach, California, in 1937, where JR attended elementary and middle school. Returning to Oklahoma in 1948, JR graduated from Canton High School in 1950.

He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951, and was sent to Syracuse University to learn the Russian language. Once fluent, he was assigned to the Security Service, and was stationed in Japan, as to intercept and translate Soviet radio communications during the Korean War.

After honorable discharge from the Air Force, he attended Long Beach State College from 1955 -59, and worked in Los Angeles as an accountant.

He moved to Evansville, Indiana in 1966, and served as Comptroller and Vice President of St. Mary’s Medical Center from 1967-1979; served as Comptroller of Charles Leich & Company from 1980-85; was Assistant Administrator of Good Samaritan Nursing Home from 1985-90; was the Administrator of Pine Haven Nursing Home from 1990-94; and the Healthcare Facilities Administrator at Gibson General Hospital from 1995-99, after which he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Reen Hermes, his wife of 40 years, Carol Jean Wheeler Kent Hermes, his son Michael Hermes, and his daughter Tina Hermes.

He was a member of Dyers’ Chapel Methodist Church. He will be missed by his church, neighbors, friends, and family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Southern Indiana Carol Kent Hermes Master’s in Healthcare Management Scholarship Endowment.
