For the second time in four months, the Cadiz City Council is looking for a new council member.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Todd King read a letter of resignation from Tim Bridges dated November 22.

According to the Kentucky League of Cities, as well as state law, Bridges had to submit a written notice specifying the date of his or her resignation to the legislative body.

The resignation then became effective at the next regular meeting, and it cannot be withdrawn.

Bridges’ vacancy must now be filled within the next 30 days, and it must be through an appointment suggested by the council members, and not the mayor.

If the city council fails to fill the vacancy within the next 30 days, the power to fill it shifts to the Governor of Kentucky, and when a vacancy occurs, both the county clerk and Secretary of State must be notified immediately in writing.

Council member Brian Futrell had no choice but to resign at the end of August, in order to meet specific guidelines about credited time in the County Employee Retirement System and the Kentucky Teacher Retirement System.

As such, he cannot be a replacement until a full year has passed in his retirement, and it leaves this legislative body with a key decision to make during this Christmas holiday.

Todd Wallace, who was on the ballot for the council this fall, was appointed in Futrell’s stead.
