County Road Department Being Proactive Ahead Of Forecasted Floods

While the usual roads and streets in Cadiz and Trigg County tend to flood with a heavy rainfall event, February’s two-day downpour of over six inches brought to light new flooding issues.

The most urgent issue was at the north end of Glenwood Mill Road near the school bus garage when over six inches of rain made the route impassible. While the Little River has flooded the Hal Fennell Bridge three times since December, water over the road at the north end trapped residents in between for a couple of days.

County Road Supervisor Brandon Calhoun says while the flooding of the bridge has become a common occurrence, the amount of water over the road at the north end in February was surprising.

Calhoun says the road department has been working to create an alternate route that will avoid water over the road at the north end and give residents of Glenwood Mill the ability to miss the high water.

In addition to Glenwood Mill Road, Calhoun says work crews have been visiting the normal areas that flood to try and improve drainage and clear tiles. He also says additional road barricades were purchased in January and may be needed this week.

Calhoun says not to move any barricades or to go around them, adding they have been put there for a reason.

Calhoun says the county is responsible for maintaining its roads, and the state highway department is responsible for blocking numbered roads where water has made it impassible. He adds you can report water or downed trees over the road to Trigg County Dispatch at 270-522-8888.
