Hillary Brewer, the Executive Director of the Armed Services YMCA in Ft. Campbell, spoke to the Hopkinsville Kiwanis Club at their meeting Thursday in support of the organization.
There are only 12 ASYMCAs across the U.S. — unlike a typical YMCA, Brewer says programs like Operation Little Learners and Little Heroes Preschool are geared directly toward armed service members and their families.
The organization also runs a thrift store and food pantry, mainly sponsored by Feeding America: Kentucky’s Heartland.
Last year, Brewer says the ASYMCA started a childcare program called the Children’s Waiting Room.
Along with year-round programming, Brewer says the non-profit offers a few special holiday programs, such as Thanksgiving dinner boxes, Operation Holiday Joy, which provides toys for children, and Operation Ride Home, which books flights for service members to come home for the holidays.
The ASYMCA currently only has 10 staff members and Brewer says they are in need of support and more volunteers.
Diapers and food pantry items are always needed as well. The organization’s Facebook page often posts wish-lists with needed items.
