Scheduled for an 8 AM start on Thanksgiving Thursday, Hopkinsville’s Annual “Turkey Trot” 5K is quickly approaching, and officials are still seeking walkers, runners, joggers, skaters, bikers and dogs (on leashes) of all ages to take part in the 3.1-mile race.
It’s non-competitive, non-timed and free for all participants.
With a starting line located on South Main Street, a rolling barricade will be facilitated by the Hopkinsville Police Department — going from 11th Street to South Wooldridge, and South Wooldridge from South Main Street to Faulkner Drive.
Registration has closed for the free T-shirt, but a small amount of shirts will be available for sale on a cash-only basis the morning of the race.
Proceeds from the shirts go to benefit the Hopkinsville Greenway Rail Trail, which is utilized in the race course.
A reminder: registration is not required for participation. Any interested parties are encouraged to join in the fun Thanksgiving morning. Release waivers will be available for non-registered participants to complete.
In the last two decades, the race has grown from a small local group to between 1,200 and 1,500 annual participants. A wide variety of community sponsors typically chip in, and this year’s effort is sponsored by Bikes & Moore, Hopkinsville Water and Environmental Authority, and others.
It’s also become a family tradition for many community members, as they enjoy a Thanksgiving morning full of fun in downtown Hopkinsville.
