Saturday was not the best of trips to Calhoun for the Heritage Christian Academy Warriors. A hot start for the Cougars carried McLean County to a 64-31 win and starting big man Layton Gilter suffered an injury that left him undergoing dental surgery late Saturday.
McLean County hit the Warriors with a 14-2 run to open the game. It was a run from which HCA never recovered. The Cougar lead was 19-4 when the quarter came to an end.
The Heritage offense found its footing as the second quarter got underway but the Warriors were not able to cut into the lead as McLean County took a 36-18 lead into the break.
The Cougars came out and effectively finished the game off quickly in the second half. A 13-0 run to open the third quarter pushed the lead out to 49-18 and from there it was simply a matter of the final score.
McLean County was leading 55-22 when the third quarter ended. A quick basket at the start of the 4th got the margin up to 35 and brought the running clock into play as the Cougars rode it out to the final 33-point victory.
Landon Wells led the Warriors with 8 points. Bradley Boyd added 7 for Heritage Christian. Layton Giltner scored four points before suffering the injury that knocked him out of the game.
HCA drops to 13-12 with the loss. The Warriors are set to host Whitesville Trinity Tuesday evening.
